“Dispatch, you’re not going to believe this,” the officer muttered into his radio, taking off his cap to wipe sweat from his forehead. He handed the ID to Mrs. Gable, who was demanding answers.
The birth date on the license was from the 1980s. Zhu Shengkai, the person standing before us looking like a kindergartner, was actually a thirty-four-year-old man.
“This is Mr. Zhu,” the officer explained, hiding a smile. “He isn’t six, Ma’am. He’s older than your eldest son.” Zhu exhaled a cloud of smoke and shook his head tiredly.
Mrs. Gable turned a shade of red I didn’t know existed. She stammered, looking from Zhu’s face to the government ID, her brain failing to reconcile the two conflicting realities.
Zhu addressed the small crowd. At age six, he was hit in the head by a stone while playing, which permanently damaged his pituitary gland.
His growth hormones stopped completely that day. While his friends grew up, got married, and aged, Zhu remained biologically trapped in the body of a six-year-old forever.
The officers apologized profusely to Zhu for the delay. He didn’t seem angry; he was used to it. He dealt with this confusion every time he entered a store or drove his truck.
“I run a barbershop in the next town,” he said, leaning against the massive tractor tire. “I farm on weekends to help support my elderly parents. I’m just trying to make a living.”
He spoke about the isolation of his condition. “No woman wants a husband who looks like her son,” he said softly. The silence on the street became heavy with shame.
We had all judged him instantly based on his appearance. We saw a helpless child needing discipline, but he was a hardworking man carrying a burden none of us could imagine.
Mrs. Gable turned and walked back to her house without saying another word. Her “heroic” call to save a child had turned into a humiliating lesson in prejudice.
The officer cancelled the dispatch ticket. “Sorry for the trouble, sir. Drive safe,” he said, saluting the small man with the giant spirit.
