Steve was a seasoned fisherman in the Florida Keys. He was used to seeing alligators and manatees, but that evening the ocean had something completely different in store for him.

The sun was already setting, and he was far from land—over 4 miles out. Suddenly, he noticed a strange object bobbing in the waves. At first, it looked like a dead palm tree.
But his intuition told him: “Check it out.” Steve turned on his camera and steered his kayak toward the object. What he saw a minute later made him freeze.
It wasn’t a plant. It was a living creature desperately fighting for its life in the middle of the open ocean, a place where it definitely did not belong.
Steve squinted and saw spikes on its back. It was an iguana! A giant lizard swimming in salty water, surrounded by nothing but sharks and a strong current.

“Dude, what are you doing out here? Are you lost?” Steve called out, knowing there would be no answer. The animal looked completely exhausted.
Iguanas can swim, but not for such distances. Steve realized: a King Tide had simply washed it out to sea during a storm.
